The project, expected to be completed by 2018, will include the hospital’s first cardiac catheterization lab — where heart procedures including ablation, angiogram, angioplasty and implantation of pacemakers will be performed. In addition, the expansion will include 20 new inpatient beds, space for dozens of additional physicians and six operating rooms — bringing the total to 16.

The Spine & Joint Center of Excellence, described as the “cornerstone” of the project, will offer expanded sports medicine, sports performance and pain center services.
“The orthopedic program at Miami Valley Hospital South already ranks in the top 10 percent nationwide by many measures,” said Mark Shaker, president of Miami Valley Hospital. “We’re very pleased to have the opportunity to increase the program’s capacity to give more people quick access to this quality care close to home.”

The hospital will also expand services in other areas, including emergency medicine, cardiology and primary care. The expansion, which is expected to start next spring and be completed in stages through the third quarter of 2018, was spurred by the growing demand for the hospitals services in the local area, according to hospital officials and executives from Dayton-based Premier Health, which owns the hospital.
“We’ve reached capacity here in many of these services, and we are still experiencing increased demand,” said Joann Ringer, vice president and chief operating officer of Miami Valley Hospital South, which now interacts with more than 34,000 patients a year.
In addition to new construction, the expansion will also include the renovation of 42,000 square feet of the hospital’s more than 580,000 existing square feet.
Mike Maiberger, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Premier Health, said the expansion demonstrates Premier’s continued commitment to meeting the demands of the local community and surrounding area as the hospital approaches its 10-year anniversary.
“Consumers across our region have many choices when it comes to health care,“ Maiberger said. “When this expansion is complete, citizens of Centerville, Sugarcreek Township, Bellbrook and other nearby communities will have even more reasons to access services and place their trust in Miami Valley Hospital South.”
The latest expansion announcement comes on the heels of the construction of a $20 million cancer center that opened in January 2013 and was dubbed a “hub for cancer care,” offering all the components of advanced cancer care in one location. In the past five years, Premier Health has spent $51 million to build the five-story, 93,000-square-foot cancer center, a new patient tower and maternity center.
Premier Health President Mary Boosalis described the hospital as one of the health system’s most valuable assets.
“There are certain services people really want with close access, and there is growth in this part of the market,” Boosalis said during the press conference. “So we view this campus as a community asset, and we’re going to continue to invest in it.”
Hospital construction
Local hospitals have responded to a spike in demand for services with millions of dollars in new development in recent years, including:
• Kettering Health Network's $49 million, five-story cancer center slated to open later this month on the main campus of Kettering Medical Center.
• Dayton Children's Hospital's $47.5 million expansion of its Springboro campus, including an already-opened 70,000-square-foot medical office building, a 16-room emergency department and an outpatient surgery center opening in stages through August.
• Dayton Children's Hospital's $141 million, 260,000-square-foot, eight-story patient tower is currently under construction on its main campus at One Children's Plaza near downtown Dayton.
• Premier Health’s $20 million, 93,000-square-foot comprehensive cancer center that opened in January 2013 at Miami Valley Hospital South.
