AFRL partnership finds downtown home

A Wright Brothers Institute-Air Force Research Laboratory partnership has announced a new downtown home.

The partnership will soon sign a lease for a 444 E. Second St. location as a “first step” in anchoring what advocates hope will be a downtown Dayton “Innovation District,” the institute said in a release Monday.

The institute will have 8,000 square feet on the first floor of 444 E. Second as part of its on-going partnership with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the organization said.

The site was formerly used by a University of Dayton Research Institute sensors lab.

Woodard Development will lead the build out and the space should be ready for occupancy in late spring of 2017, the organization said.

“This space provides proximity to start-ups and accelerators in the downtown area and we wanted to make the move quickly,” Wright Brothers Institute’s Executive Director Les McFawn said in the statement. “This location is ideal for experimenting with how the Air Force Research Laboratory might engage with businesses in downtown Dayton.”

The idea is to connect with small, local, innovative businesses in the downtown area.

“As we begin developing colliders for the downtown space, people can connect with us online, prior to the move-in date, so they can take full advantage of what we plan to offer,” said Jim Masonbrink, director of the AFRL Small Business Hub.
