Construction begins on new downtown hotel

Ground has been broken and construction has started on the new Fairfield Inn and Suites in downtown Dayton.

It’s to be the first new downtown hotel Dayton has seen in “quite a while,” said Ford Weber, city of Dayton economic development director.

Marriott announced early last year that it had awarded a 115-room Fairfield Inn and Suites franchise to the developers of the burgeoning Water Street section of downtown, Crawford Hoying and Woodard Development.

“Water Street is seeing tremendous growth along the downtown Dayton riverfront,” the developers said in their announcement in January 2016. “The hotel … is the next piece in the overall Water Street District master plan.”

The Fairfield Inn is being raised at the northeast corner of Patterson Boulevard and Monument Avenue.

“Good or bad, the downtown hotel stock is a little tired, despite some improvements that have been made,” Jason Woodard, principal of Woodard Development, told the Greater Downtown Priority Land Use Board last April, as the board voted to support the project. “This offers another alternative.”

A message was left for Woodard Tuesday.
