Downtown Dayton offering cheap leases for new businesses

An initiative to fill storefronts downtown is accepting applications from business owners who want short-term leases.

Activated Spaces, a project aiming to bring more small businesses downtown, matches business owners and entrepreneurs with downtown property owners who have first-floor storefront space available for occupancy.

The deadline to apply is Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. to apply, and tenants will be notified the week of March 6. Retailers must be ready to open in May.

Leases range from three to six months, and the spaces will have varying lease rates. Rates are below market value, however. Approximately 13 of the businesses that have opened through the Pop-Up Project are still open in Dayton.

Some of these businesses include Beaute Box, Peace on Fifth, Hicks’ Barber Shop, Catapult Creative, Twist Cupcakery, Fronana, Bucker Laptops and Soccer Shots. Since the inception of the project in 2011, about 41 new jobs have been created and more than 21,000 square feet of vacant space has been occupied.
