5 food recalls you should be concerned about in February

If there’s an illness caused by a food product, the FDA typically hears about that from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to the agency.

“CDC hears about such problems from state health departments that have received and submitted illness reports,” said Dorothy Miller, director of the FDA’s Office of Emergency Operations. “An ongoing outbreak means that we have an emergency, and when there’s a public health crisis like this, you need to tell the public immediately.”

Here are five companies that have recalled products in Ohio during February:

1. Smokeless tobacco products recalled in Ohio

U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company has voluntarily recalled certain smokeless tobacco products after metal objects were found in select cans. The products were manufactured in an Illinois facility, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been notified. The products were distributed nationally. READ MORE HERE

2. Product recalled at Whole Foods in Ohio

A noodle product sold at Whole Foods in Ohio and several other states has been recalled due to a possible Listeria contamination. Veggie Noodle Co. of Texas is voluntarily recalling 62 cases of Butternut Spirals because it could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in some people. READ MORE HERE

3. Sargento, Meijer recall several cheese products

Sargento Foods Inc. has recalled several of its products due to a potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes, and several cheese products sold at Meijer grocery stores were also impacted. Indiana-based Deutsch Kase Haus notified Sargento that a specialty Longhorn Colby cheese they supplied to the company had been recalled due to the possible contamination. READ MORE HERE

4. PetSmart recalls dog food contaminated with metal

PetSmart has issued a voluntary recall of one of its adult dog food products after metal was found in some cans. "Grreat Choice" Adult Dog Food was sold on PetSmart.com, Pet360.com, PetFoodDirect.com and in stores nationwide. The product, sold in 13.2 ounce cans between Oct. 10, 2016 and Feb. 7, could be contaminated with metal. READ MORE HERE

5. Pies recalled at Kroger stores in Ohio

Denver-based Legendary Baking is recalling its 34-ounce packages of Private Selection Salted Caramel Almond Pie, and the products were sold in Ohio stores. The almonds and eggs were listed under "may contains" instead of "contains," according to a recall alert. READ HERE
