Recent openings, closings at Springfield’s Upper Valley Mall

Upper Valley Mall, a Springfield staple for shopping since 1971, has seen its share of closures and new stores in recent times.

It's lost anchor stores such as Macy's, JC Penny, and Elder-Beerman and several smaller businesses have moved to Bechtle Avenue recently.

The mall has continued to also attract businesses in hopes to continue its presence as a shopping center for Springfield and Clark County.

Here are some of the recent closings and openings at Upper Valley Mall.

CLOSINGS

Chakeres Upper Valley Mall Cinema 5

One of the few remaining stores from the mall’s initial opening, Cinema 5 closed its doors Monday night.

The theater initially had two screens and expanded to three when it was still owned by General Cinemas Corp. Chakeres took over the business in the late 1980s and expanded it to five screens.

Chakeres will continue to operate Cinema 10 on East National Road in Springfield and Celina Cinema 5. The company also continues to operate the Melody 49 Drive-in in Brookville. The Melody Cruise-In on East National Road in Springfield won’t re-open again this summer because it became too expensive to manage, company leaders said.

MC Sports

MC Sports, a national retailer based in Michigan, filed for bankruptcy and said it will begin immediate liquidation sales at all stores.

MC Sports will begin liquidation sales at all of its 68 stores nationwide, according to a news release, although it also will pursue alternative financing and sale options. The chain has several stores in Ohio, including Springfield, Piqua and Wilmington. A sign posted on the Upper Valley Mall location this week says the store is closing.

Boonshoft Museum of Discovery

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery Springfield closed its location at the Upper Valley Mall last April.

The 20,000-square-foot museum had occupied space in the former Elder-Beerman store at the mall since November of 2013.
