UD sets a new research record

The University of Dayton set another research record in fiscal year 2017 and reclaimed its preeminent spot in federally sponsored materials engineering research.

UD said it rose in National Science Foundation rankings for fiscal 2016 higher education research expenditures.

UD ranks in the top 25 of all U.S. colleges and universities in eight categories, it also said Tuesday.

UDRI has been on a steady climb in recent years. In September 2016, the institute announced that for the first time, it had surpassed more than $100 million in sponsored research and development in a single year.

The university said Tuesday that it had “reclaimed the top spot for federally sponsored materials engineering research.”

Among Ohio universities, UD ranks No. 1 for all sponsored materials engineering research and development, federally sponsored engineering research and development, and Department of Defense research and development.

UDRI has about 550 full-time and part-time employees. Nearly 100 faculty and 300 students also engage in sponsored research, the university said.
