UD ranks in the top 25 of all U.S. colleges and universities in eight categories, it also said Tuesday.

UD and its research institute performed $135.9 million in sponsored research in fiscal year 2017, well above the previous record of $117.6 million set in fiscal 2016.

“Our research reputation and profile continues to grow thanks to many dedicated researchers in our Research Institute, the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Education and Health Sciences, School of Engineering, School of Business Administration and School of Law working to explain and solve the world’s problems to advance the common good,” UD President Eric Spina said in the university’s announcement.

UDRI has been on a steady climb in recent years. In September 2016, the institute announced that for the first time, it had surpassed more than $100 million in sponsored research and development in a single year.
The university said Tuesday that it had “reclaimed the top spot for federally sponsored materials engineering research.”
Among Ohio universities, UD ranks No. 1 for all sponsored materials engineering research and development, federally sponsored engineering research and development, and Department of Defense research and development.
UDRI has about 550 full-time and part-time employees. Nearly 100 faculty and 300 students also engage in sponsored research, the university said.
