Tesla ‘for the masses’ model debuts July 28

U.S. automaker Tesla Inc. is set to debut what some are calling its new “lower-cost” model later this month.

At $35,000, the Model 3 — dubbed by some the “Tesla for the masses” — is set to be delivered to its first customers July 28, Tesla founder Elon Musk tweeted late Sunday.

“Handover party for first 30 customer Model 3’s on the 28th!” the industrialist and entrepreneur (@elonmusk) tweeted Sunday. “Production grows exponentially, so Aug should be 100 cars and Sept above 1500.”

“Looks like we can reach 20,000 Model 3 cars per month in Dec,” he added.

There are Tesla stores in Cincinnati and in the Columbus area. While the Dayton area has a Tesla supercharger at 9200 N. Main St., off Interstate 70, the area has no Tesla dealer or gallery. There are also Tesla electric vehicle charging stations at Dorothy Lane Market in Kettering, Springboro and Centerville, according to the Tesla web site.

With a $7,500 federal electric car tax credit, the new car would cost $27,500. Tesla says the five-seat car will be able to go 215 miles on a single charge, able to accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in under six seconds, the Associated Press reported.

Musk had said that production was on track to start in July, but Tesla has often faced delays in getting vehicles to market, the AP noted. The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company aims to make 5,000 Model 3 sedans per week by the end of this year and 10,000 per week in 2018.

Tesla hasn’t said how many people have put down $1,000 refundable deposits for the Model 3, but Musk has said people who put down a deposit now won’t get a car until the end of 2018, suggesting it could be close to 500,000, media reports said.
