5 things to know about IKEA opening in Ohio this summer

Swedish furniture retailer IKEA is opening up its second store location in Ohio this summer.

Construction on the new location is quickly progressing in Columbus, and a store opening date has been projected for sometime in next few months. Here are five things you need to know about the new location before its grand opening:

1. More than 500 jobs have been created during the construction phase of the project, and approximately 300 more workers will be employed when the new store opens. IKEA is currently hiring for the location, and applicants can apply online.

2. The store just finished up installing one of the largest solar rooftops in Ohio. The Columbus store's solar array will be built 3,546 panels and will reduce 1,017 tons of carbon dioxide. That's equal to the emissions of 215 cars.

3. The property is just 15 miles north of downtown Columbus, and will span 354,000 square feet. It will also include 1,100 parking spaces on 33 acres in the Polaris Centers of Commerce development.

4. The building was swiftly erected, and construction workers made steady progress throughout the year. In October, cranes placed the letters to form the words "IKEA" and "Home furnishings" onto the blue, exterior panels of the south side of the building. Crews also initiated the setting of 42 roof-mounted air conditioning units, placed by a helicopter.

5. The company has locations in 48 countries, and has 42 in the U.S. The retailer also has a store located in West Chester Twp., just north of Cincinnati. The West Chester location was the first to open in Ohio in 2008.
