5 things you need to know about Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton

1. HISTORY Good Samaritan has been in business for more than 85 years. In 1928, the city of Dayton partnered with the Sisters of Charity in Cincinnati to raise $1 million to finance the construction of the hospital at Salem and Philadelphia avenues. The project took four years to complete, and when Good Samaritan Hospital opened in 1932, it was "due to the efforts of the Sisters as well as the businesses and citizens of Dayton," according to Premier Health.

2. SERVICES Good Samaritan Hospital is a full-service teaching facility that delivers care in cardiovascular, cancer, stroke, emergency, and orthopedic services, as well as advanced diagnostics and women's health services. It offers outpatient treatment, rehabilitation, diagnostics and other services through its Good Samaritan North Health Center and Good Samaritan Health Center – Huber Heights and Greenville locations.

3. AWARD-WINNING CARE The hospital has been named a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence by Healthgrades for four consecutive years (2014-2017). In addition, GSH has been named a Healthgrades America's 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care (2016-2017). Good Samaritan Hospital is a member of the Premier Health system.

4. LOCATIONS Good Samaritan has its main hospital near downtown Dayton, but it also has several other buildings. Two outpatient surgery centers are located at 2222 Philadelphia Drive and 9000 N. Main St. in Englewood. There are Good Samaritan Health Centers in Greenville, Huber Heights and Englewood. Emergency Centers are also located at Good Samaritan North Health Center and Good Samaritan Hospital. There is also the Samaritan Behavioral Health Center at 601 Edwin C. Moses Blvd.

5. EXPANSION THROUGHOUT THE YEARS In 2015, a four-story, 96,000 square foot addition was completed at GSNHC and included a 22-bed emergency department. In 2003, Samaritan Pavilion was opened. With an emergency department, intensive care unit, and two additional surgical suites, Samaritan Pavilion provides current technology for the critically ill and superior emergency care for the residents of the Dayton area.

6. GOOD SAMARITAN NORTH EXPANSION: Premier Health is adding 46 inpatient beds and new operating rooms to Good Samaritan Hospital North Health Center as part of a $40 million construction project announced in April 2017.

The patient rooms, which are expected to be completed by the second half of 2018, will be built in existing shell space on the second and third floors of a 96,000-square-foot addition completed in 2015 at the health center at 9000 North Main St. in Englewood.

The build-out, which is expected to generate 65 jobs over the next five years, will included five operating rooms on the ground floor of the new building, and offices for ancillary and support departments on the fourth floor, said Eloise Broner, president of Good Samaritan Hospital, which oversees the health center.
