Trader Joe’s to expand Kettering store

The owners of the Town & Country shopping center at Stroop Road and Far Hills Avenue announced Tuesday that its specialty grocery store, Trader Joe’s, will expand early next year by 25 percent.

Columbus-based real estate company Casto said it will partner with Skilken, also based in Columbus and the original builder of the Town & Country retail center, to expand the grocery store, which is the only Trader Joe’s location in the Dayton area.

The project will add 2,500 square feet to Trader Joe’s existing 10,000 square foot store. The project is expected to be completed by March 2015, Casto spokeswoman Sarah Benson Hatcher said in a phone interview.

As part of the project, the 2nd & Charles store in the center has agreed to give up a portion of its existing store and is renovating its interior, and Cheryl’s Cookies also has relocated within the center. Roderer Shoe Center also recently completed an expansion of its store, although that expansion was not related to the Trader Joe’s project, Casto officials said.

Trader Joe’s is part of an increasingly competitive grocery market in Dayton’s south suburbs, which also includes Kroger, Dorothy Lane Market, Dot’s Market, Earth Fare, Sam’s Club, Meijer, and the recently opened Costco Warehouse, and which will soon include Whole Foods and Fresh Thyme. And some non-grocer retailers such as Target in recent years have added grocery items to make themselves more of a one-stop shopping destination, further splintering the market.

Trader Joe’s spokeswoman Rachel Broderick declined to comment Tuesday on what the expansion will mean for the California-based grocer chain’s customers, how the store will use the additional space or whether the store would be hiring additional employees to accommodate the expansion.
