Lack of formal training didn’t stop Miamisburg art winner

Terri Caprio of Kettering has no formal art training, but that didn’t keep her oil painting, “Partners,” from winning Best of Show in Miamisburg Art Gallery’s Annual Juried Art Exhibition. The painting shows the remarkable detail of a male and female bluebird in a tree. She’s a self-taught artist who has a long history of experience.

“I came to art in an unusual way. I started out 30 years ago with China painting, which is a lost art now. I switched to painting on canvas about four years ago when I joined the Decorative Artists Group of Southwestern Ohio,” said Caprio. “China painting taught me composition, layering, and how to mix colors.”

This was the first time that Caprio has entered her work in a juried show. For inspiration and finding subject matter, she travels around locally to take pictures. She also receives images from friends; this work is a composite.

“I was very surprised that I won. It was quite an unexpected cherry at the end of my summer,” said Caprio, who teaches science, biology, and chemistry at Wayne High School.

Tom Post, who has been an artist for 37 years working in graphic art and fine art, was the juror for the show. The Cincinnati resident chose 139 works from a total of 191 entries.

“Criteria I’m looking for in art: how well the artist composed or designed the piece, including the play of lights and darks, themes and variation in shapes, color harmony, and the creative approach. I also look at draftsmanship if it is applicable to the style,” said Post, who has a bachelor of fine arts degree from Columbus College of Art and Design. “Some pieces stood out and showed excellence in these challenges.”

He chose the Best of Show, plus First through Third Place winners and some Honorable Mentions in four categories, and two Memorial Awards for a total of $1,400 in prize money. Tom Kinarney of Dayton was the First Place winner in drawing for “Kathy’s Cat.”

"It was done in colored pencil on an unusual surface which was suede matboard. This surface works well for fur, feathers, etc., due to its softness," said Kinarney, who teaches drawing for the Fairborn Art Association and the Vandalia Senior Center.

Phillip Erbaugh, who lives near Brookville, won First Place in the oil and acrylic category for “Wind Rows.”

“The main inspiration …was a reminder of my youth. My neighbors were farmers, and I would work bailing hay and straw in the summers for them,” said Erbaugh. “I personally love the colors in this painting.”

Leonard Williams of Waynesville won First Place for “Golden Sunset” in the water media division. Beverly Lake of Springboro won First Place for “The Warrior: Past, Present, and Future” in the mixed media/sculpture category. The Jack Blandford Memorial Award went to Karen Kestermann of Germantown for her oil painting, “Fishing Boats.” The Doris Harting Memorial Award went to Elizabeth Martin of Kettering for her watercolor, “Taos River.”

The Miamisburg Art Gallery has 39 exhibiting members and 34 associate members. Artists did not have to be a member to enter works in the show. Exhibit coordinator/membership chair Darcy Morgan is proud of the gallery’s history.

“In my opinion, we have some of the best artists in the area. We’ve had tremendous talent participate in our shows; artists like Fred Betz, Richard Black, Donna Brinkman, and David Smith who have passed on,” said Morgan. “We’re getting some younger people coming in, and that’s always a good thing.”
