Gyro King moved into the food-court space at the Mall at Fairfield Commons that previously housed Designer Dogs. The Mediterranean restaurant’s menu offers beef gyro, chicken gyro, falafel, platters, soups and salads with traditional sweets.
The new Springboro tavern/sports bar opened its doors mid-March at 495 N. Main St. in Springboro. The owners encountered criticism from some customers for barring kids after 3 p.m. Currently, Mr. Boro's Tavern opens at 2 p.m., but plans call for adding lunch service and opening as early as 11 a.m.
Synergy Blend at The Greene, a new healthier-food specialty shop, is located within LA Fitness and is open to the public. The new shop’s menu offers customers smoothies and smoothie bowls with unique ingredients such as chia seeds, goji berries, hemp granola and soy milk.
On March 16, Victor’s Taco Shop opened its third Dayton-area store at 483 W. Main St. in Xenia. The taco-and-burrito carry-out chain offers its customers a menu that includes tacos, enchiladas, burritos, taquitos, and tostadas.
Winans Chocolates + Coffee opened a Centerville shop that previously housed a Saxby’s Coffee not even 24 hours earlier. The owner and six other people opened the store overnight on Sunday, working through the night to make the conversion.
R Taco, a Texas-based chain, opened its doors on Brown Street near the University of Dayton on March 13. The restaurant seats about 80 inside and an additional 25 on the patio.
On March 1, Merit Grill opened its doors at 3800 Wilmington Pike in the space that previously held the Kettering Grill & Cafe. The restaurant will offer a menu that features dishes from around the world, including Italy, Mexico, Asia. It includes steak dishes.

The pizza shop in the works in Airway Shopping Center could open its doors as soon as late April. The new Cassano’s will be able to seat 40 and will probably add eight to 10 jobs.
The restaurant chain, founded by three Oakwood natives, has plans to open a new store near Bravo! at Fairfield Commons. The restaurant’s opening date is tentatively set for May 1, according to a spokesman for Fusian Sushi.
Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen
A new restaurant will be built on the site of former PNC Bank branch at 4025 Wilmington at East Stroop Road. Plans call for the demolition of the bank and building a 3,200-square-foot restaurant, Dayton-area Popeyes franchisee Pat Gilligan said. The restaurant is projected to seat 65 and could open as early as the end of the year.
The pizza chain Sbarro is returning to the Mall at Fairfield Commons after closing three years earlier. The restaurant will open in the food court in May, a spokeswoman for the mall said.

The region’s newest Tim Horton’s, just north of Stebbins High School, is tentatively scheduled to open in the third week of April. The Canadian-based company has plans to open three other stores in the Dayton region. One location recently had plans approved, and two others that were in the final stages of negotiations, as of March 23.
Troni Brothers Pizza could open its doors in the Wilmington Heights Shopping Center as early as this week. The 1,600-square-foot restaurant will offer its customers a menu that includes pasta dishes, calzones, stromboli and sub sandwiches.

The 937 Grill & Tap Room closed its doors March 10 partially due to a dispute that threatened to block the transfer of the bar’s liquor license. About 10 employees will be affected by the closure at 2866 S. Dixie Drive.
Carmella’s Italian Kitchen had just opened its door four months before it shut down on March 5. The owner, Scott Anderson, said lackluster sales prompted the decision to shut down. The space at 6204 Wilmington Pike was home to Murphy’s Irish Pub from May 2014 to November 2016.
