Winter Guard International World Championship to return to Dayton

Winter Guard International is coming back to Dayton for its 40th anniversary.

Around 12,000 participants will compete during the WGI World Championships, which take place in April in Dayton, Ohio.

“WGI Sport of the Arts continues to be a catalyst for extracurricular activity in most high schools, with close to 100,000 dedicated students wanting to participate in marching arts in local, national and international events,” said WGI Executive Director Ron Nankervis.

It is among the fastest-growing marching arts, winter guard, indoor percussion and winds to enjoy. This event will mark the 30th time that Dayton has hosted parts of the championship.

WGI is dedicated to bringing youth and the performing arts together for the opportunity to foster positive experiences for its participants by challenging a higher level of achievement and personal growth. In addition to promoting higher education, the non-profit organization will be awarding $40,000 in academic scholarships to deserving youth in 2017.

Youth and their families will travel from cities like Phoenix, Tampa, San Antonio, Knoxville, Dallas, Indianapolis, Atlanta and others to participate in this championship held in Dayton.

“It is our goal to continually expand the knowledge of the marching arts globally and share all the values and benefits of our activity,” Nankervis said.
