How you can help Therapeutic Riding Institute

The Therapeutic Riding Institute provides therapeutic horseback riding experiences for children and adults with disabilities. The mission is to enhance lives by providing accredited therapeutic equine experiences in a safe, fun and compassionate environment.

“It is amazing to visit our arena during a class session,” says executive director Marleen Milkis. “We watch as students achieve personal goals while learning horseback riding skills. It is not unusual to watch riders smile and families cry as miracles are achieved in the arena every day.”

Founded in 1973 by Betty Lou Townley and Linden Moore, TRI has grown to serve 166 individuals from a seven county area and provides classes five days per week with more than 350 volunteers contributing to the program. TRI is currently the only PATH International Premier Accredited Center in the Dayton area providing Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy, an experiential treatment option through a partnership with Riverscape Counseling. TRI also partners with Kettering’s South Community to offer a curriculum geared toward at-risk youth, focusing on social skills, problem solving, team work and self-regulating emotions.

Thanks to a grant from the Brighter Tomorrows Foundation, TRI is now able to offer their students’ families an opportunity to be more actively involved in the experience. Students are able to invite up to two of their family members to ride in lessons with them. This program is designed to promote whole-family activity, as well as to give students an opportunity to be the leader in an active learning environment.

The organization is located at FineLine Stables in Springboro.
