Wiener dog race returns to Oregon District’s Derby Day party

Time to prove the fastest hot dog in the world (or at least, in the Dayton area) licks your face on the regular.

Dachshunds are being sought for the Oregon District's second annual Derby Day Running of the Wieners race, which is set to begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 6.

The race, hosted by Trolley Stop at 30 E. Fifth St., is part of 5th Street Derby Day.

The full day of Kentucky Derby Day action in the Oregon District includes slot car races at Blind Bob’s, 430 E 5th St., and horseshoe painting at Brim, 464 E. 5th St.

There will also be big games, a living statue and other entertainment and music.

"We love to illustrate all of the weird parts of the Oregon District and the fun quirkiness of what we are," said Oregon District Business Association President   Amelia O'Dowd, the owner of Brim. "This is a great way for the businesses to engage."

5th Street Derby Day is free and family-friendly, O’Dowd said. Events start at 1 p.m. and go until 8 p.m.

THE FAST 10 SECONDS IN DAYTON DOG RACING

The race has expanded this year.

This year, three preliminary rounds will build up to the final races at 4:45 p.m., Bryan Stewart, a race organizer said.

In 2016, there was one race and about a dozen dogs.

About 30 wiener dogs will be accepted into the race this year. About 10 have already been signed up.

“We want to keep the Oregon District funky, to get people out and about on Derby Day, and it is hilarious,” Stewart said.
