5 big projects to be excited about in the Dayton area

Many big announcements for the construction of new retail space and housing have been balanced with just as many that will reuse existing space or add to it this year.

Here are five projects that will or hope to see big changes soon in the Dayton region.

ďťżKROGER AT CORNERSTONE

Kroger opened its newest local store at the Cornerstone of Centerville in June between Costco and Cabela’s, joining a host of other big-box stores along the I-675 corridor at Wilmington Pike. Kroger officials said the store has been in the works for a long time as they saw the growth of population in Centerville, Sugarcreek Twp. and Bellbrook. The grocery giant will close a smaller Kroger store in Kettering at 2100 E. Whipp Rd.

Just down Wilmington Pike from Cornerstone, the Sugarcreek Plaza has two new retailers who have built out the former Cub Foods. Bed Bath & Beyond and Buy Buy Baby are about to open at 6134 Wilmington Pike. Bed, Bath & Beyond is a chain retail store that sells bedding, bath towels, kitchen electrics, cookware and storage items. Buy Buy Baby, also a chain retailer, offers an assortment of baby gear, furniture, clothes and toys. The stores are expected to open in October.

More retail space in Beavercreek will be reused as Texas-based At Home has negotiated a deal to fill the former Kmart at 4480 Indian Ripple Rd. across from The Greene Town Center. At Home is a home dĂŠcor chain retail business. Flying Ace Express Car Wash and a Starbucks recently opened in the same block. No opening date has been set for At Home.

ďťżDAYTON ARCADE MOVES

In an ultimate reuse of existing space, the Dayton Arcade received $5 million in state historic tax credits in June, a major step toward renovation of the massive downtown complex. Developers say the Arcade project would be a catalyst that fuels a large-scale resurgence of downtown that creates a new urban neighborhood.
