Last year, employers hired more seasonal workers than previously and this year will be more of the same. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), retailers are expected to hire between 720,000 and 780,000 this year. Your Better Business Bureau says start your search early to help your chances of landing a seasonal job.
Including those who work in shipping and other industries, total seasonal hiring was 720,500 in 2012. This year, because of higher expected sales, more seasonal workers will be needed. The NRF says sales in November and December are expected to increase 3.9 percent to $602.1 billion. Online sales are also expected to grow again.
Your BBB offers these seasonal job search tips:
• Start your job search early. Some companies began hiring months ago.
• Ask friends and family who work at companies that add seasonal workers for a head’s up if they know positions may be available.
• Work where you shop. You’ll be familiar with the business and its products. Also, you may get discounts.
• Be wary of online job postings. Scammers post fake jobs on sites aimed at stealing money or identities. Never give out personal information without checking out the company.
• Treat this job search like you’d do any other. Dress appropriately and have your resume up-to-date. Be prepared to be interviewed on the spot and share your strengths and job knowledge with potential employers. Also, be familiar with the company’s brand and products.
• Be flexible. Seasonal employees are expected to work long hours, weekends, nights and even on holidays. If, this is a second job, tell the employer what hours you’re available.
• Inquire about full-time work. Many companies keep a small percentage of seasonal workers as permanent employees.
