Dayton murder suspect pleads no contest, to be sentenced next month

Joshua Verdell entered a no contest plea to murder and other charges and was found guilty Wednesday in the December 2016 shooting death of 27-year-old Stephan Shyne.

Verdell, 28, was to go to trial next week in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court. Instead, he pleaded as charged. His attorney, Jay Carter, said Verdell wants to challenge on appeal evidence gathered by police that Judge Barbara Gorman allowed.

Carter said Gorman likely would sentence Verdell to 18 years to life during a sentencing hearing in two weeks. Verdell was charged with three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault and one count of tampering with evidence in connection to the death of Shyne.

Carter said the two friends got into an argument before shots were fired on Paul Laurence Dunbar Street.
