Exclusive: Man hit, run over in Riverside talks of ordeal

A man said he’s lucky to be alive after he was struck by a vehicle, which then ran over him before leaving him in the street.

“From what I’m told, eight or nine cars drove around me,” Justin Wessler on Saturday told News Center 7’s Sean Cudahy in an exclusive interview. “Finally, a lady stopped and found me laying in the road. She happened to be a nurse. Thank God. Who knows what would have happened?”

VIDEO: Riverside police looking for this vehicle that strikes man

The Dayton man on Sept. 15 was trying to cross Airway Road in Riverside to start his 7 a.m. shift at McDonald’s. All he remembers is flicking his cigarette, changing the song on his cellphone, lighting a half cigarette, and stepping off the curb.

“Then it’s blank,” Wessler said. “When I see the video, I didn’t know I made it so far across the street. I thought it happened right when I first stepped off the curb.

“I don’t have a recollection of crossing the street at all, none; don’t remember getting hit, seeing the vehicle. Blank, completely blank.”

He was in and out of consciousness on the road, in the ambulance and at the hospital, where doctors told him he was lucky to have no broken bones. Wessler did suffer a pinhole-sized brain bleed and concussion, along with large gashes, deep bruises and a big knot on his head. He still gets woozy when he stands up, and said his 6-year-old son cried when he saw him banged up and bandaged.

To the driver who hit him, “I would accept an apology,” he said.

“Apparently after he hit me he ran me over, pulled up a little bit and then he went through my job at the drive-through and got food or something and went on his business.

“I understand accidents happen. Maybe he didn’t see me or maybe he was on his phone ... but you’re going to hit me and leave me?”
