Fake money causing issues in Greene County

Xenia police are investigating after reports of counterfeit money have been filed across the city.

Since January, Xenia police have had multiple reports of fake cash at businesses, including Stan’s One Stop on West Second Street.

“It looked like a regular $100 bill, but on the back, where it said in United States Treasury or America, it said for motion picture use only,” said Lori Britch, a cashier at Stan’s One Stop.

There have been reports of similar counterfeit cash being passed in Montgomery County within the last few months.

In Xenia, the Subway store on West Main Street has even posted a sign telling its customers they will no longer accept $100 bills.

Counterfeit cash isn’t something foreign to Xenia, last fall the Burger King on Orange Street stopped taking bills after one of its workers accidentally collected counterfeit money.

Britch said Stan’s One Stop now uses a scanner to help identify whether money being passed is real or fake.

“We take it, put it under here, and you’ll see a line if it’s real or fake.  If there’s no line, we won’t accept it,” she said.

If you suspect money being passed during a transaction you should contact your local law enforcement agency, so they can investigate.
