Heavy police call-out near UD ends quietly

More than a half-dozen Dayton police vehicles responded to an Irving Avenue apartment building on Friday morning, but were unable to make contact with the man they came for.

Sgt. Steven Bauer said Dayton police got a call from an adjacent county asking them to “go out and check on an individual,” in the 1200 block of Irving, just off Wilmington Avenue.

Asked whether that meant a simple welfare check or a felony warrant call-out, Bauer said, “It was a mix of things. It didn’t really meet the criteria for a SWAT call-out. The individual’s not answering the door, so we’re clearing the scene.”

Just after 9 a.m., multiple Dayton police officers were inside the apartment building, some on the stairwell, some guarding the door. Other officers were outside watching the side and rear of the building, but none of the officers who were visible had their weapons drawn.

Asked whether neighbors should be wary for their safety, Bauer said, “I don’t think it raises any additional concern for anybody else.”
