NEW DETAILS: Miami Twp. police shooting ‘pretty straight-forward’

A shooting involving a 17-year-old robbery suspect and an off-duty Miami Twp. police officer occurred Monday afternoon on Ohio 725 in Miamisburg at the I-75 interchange.

We are seeking to learn the identities of both the suspect and the officer involved. Neither have been released as of Tuesday morning.

Here is what we know so far:

-The suspect, a Dayton teen, is scheduled in juvenile court Tuesday afternoon.

-The handling of the issue was "pretty straight-forward and there is no wrongdoing suspected on the officer doing the shooting," according to Miamisburg Police Department Sgt. Jeff Muncy.

-The robbery "was related to several other(s)," according to police records.

-Police said the suspect's vehicle stalled, he exited his vehicle in the intersection of Ohio 725 and I-75 and began trying to carjack another vehicle.

-The suspect sought to carjack at least three vehicles before being confronted by an off-duty officer, police said.

-The suspect was found with a loaded gun, police said.

-The Miamisburg Police Department is investigating. In recent officer-involved shootings, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has overseen cases when the shooting occurred in the jurisdiction the officer was a part of.

-Police said the officer shot the armed suspect he saw attempting to carjack motorists after allegedly holding up a Shell service station on Byers Road near Ohio 725.

-Police said the suspect was said to have pointed his gun at the off-duty officer, who demanded the suspect drop the weapon.

-Police said the suspect was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not considered to be life-threatening, and the officer was transported as standard protocol.

-Police said the suspect may have been inebriated.

-This is the second time in the past several weeks a shooting has involved a Miami Twp. officer. On Dec. 20, Miami Twp. resident Robert Edwards, 33, was shot and killed after police said he refused to drop his weapon.

Officers James McCarty and Shawn Todd responded to the call that Edwards was making suicidal threats, “drinking and ready to pull the trigger,” police said. Officers later discovered the weapon was a pellet gun.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is overseeing that case at Miami Twp.’s request. McCarty and Todd haven returned to work after being on paid administrative leave, standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.
