Suspect accused of setting Springfield home on fire

A Springfield man has been accused of setting a house on fire late last year.

Darren Carroll, 25, was arraigned in Clark County Municipal Court on Monday on two counts of aggravated arson and charges of aggravated menacing and domestic violence.

His case was continued until Jan. 31 and he didn’t enter a plea.

Police were called to a home in the 600 block of East Madison Avenue on Nov. 22 on a report that Carroll was attempting to kick in the door to see a woman he knows, according to court records.

Minutes later, the resident called dispatchers again and alerted them that he now smelled smoke.

As officers arrived on scene, they saw the porch was on fire and the resident and his dogs couldn’t get out of the house. The back door was jammed shut. Officers used fire extinguishers to contain the fire enough to remove the resident from the home.

Firefighters arrived then and put out the fire.

The daughter of the home’s resident told officers that Carroll had allegedly threatened to burn the home down and kill him, according to court records.
