Suspects arrested in Springfield pursuit identified

The Ohio Highway Patrol in Springfield arrested two Dayton residents and found marijuana in a rented sport utility vehicle that led a pursuit through the city Thursday afternoon.

The pursuit started at approximately 5 p.m. when a trooper on Interstate 70 responded to a report that the Chevrolet Tahoe was driving recklessly.

Because of heavy traffic, the trooper temporarily stopped pursuing out of safety concerns after the Tahoe exited onto U.S. 72 and drove into the city.

The pursuit resumed on John Street and the Tahoe soon wrecked at East North and North Spring streets.

The driver, Dontay Yarbrough, 22, of Dayton, ran away but was apprehended by Springfield police a short time later in the post office parking lot. Yarbrough was booked into the Clark County Jail on charges of fleeing and elluding, possession of marijuana and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, OSP Sgt. Merrill Thompson said.

Witnesses reported seeing the Springfield officers pulled up and exited their cruisers with weapons drawn.

Yarbrough was trying to hide in between the postal employees' vehicles, according to OSP.

The passenger, Roni Jones, 21, of Dayton, remained in the Tahoe. Jones was taken into custody after being treated for minor injuries at the scene and booked into the Clark County Jail on drug possession charges.

OSP seized two small bags of marijuana during their search, Thompson said.
