12-year-old boy arrested in second bomb threat of year in Springboro

A 12-year-old boy was arrested Thursday in connection with a bomb threat found written on a Springboro Junior High School bathroom wall.

Police Chief Jeff Kruithoff said it was the second bomb threat of the school year, following a dozen ending last year at school districts in SpringboroLebanon and Waynesville.

On Thursday, students were not evacuated, following a new policy established in a countywide meeting following last year’s cases, Kruithoff said.

“Evacuation is not the first option they go to,” he said.

Last year, Springboro High School was evacuated and the next day of school was canceled so the building's duct system could be checked for bombs. Schools in Lebanon and Waynesville were also evacuated due to bomb threats by students.

About noon Thursday, a school resource officer at Springboro Junior High was contacted about the message, found on a boys’ bathroom wall at the school on Ohio 741, South Main Street in Springboro.

Aaron Nicley, the school resource officer at the junior high, and school officials “immediately began to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of the students,” according to a press release.

The building was searched and it was determined “it was not a credible threat,” said Neej Shockley, a spokesperson for the school district.

After viewing surveillance videos, police and school officials determined the boy, who is a student at the school, had written “Bombs are coming” on the wall.

He was arrested and taken to the Warren County Juvenile Detention Center in Lebanon.

Kruithoff said it was likely the boy would be charged with juvenile delinquency by manner of inducing panic and making false alarms.

It was unclear if a hearing was held Thursday afternoon or if the boy was being held in the detention center. SOCIAL MEDIA:  Follow Lawrence Budd on Twitter.

Details on the other case weren’t available Thursday. Kruithoff said a third incident, involving writing on a bathroom wall, was not determined to be a school threat.
