Dayton Beer Company snags 2 gold medals in national beer competition

The Dayton Beer Company has captured gold medals for two of its beers in a national beer competition.

In the 2018 Beer Army Beer Wars commercial beer competition, Dayton Beer Company's Upright Smoked Vienna Lager took the gold medal in the category of Rauchbier, and its Beast of Tadmor Village scored gold in the Wood-aged Beer category. The Rauchbier category attracted two entries, and the wood-aged beer category included 10 entries.

This is the second year for the North Carolina-based Beer Army Beer Wars competition. There was no indication any other Dayton-area breweries entered their beers in the competition, although several other Ohio breweries did enter and win medals, including Hoppin’ Frog Brewery in Akron, and North High Brewing, Platform Beer Co. and Wolf’s Ridge Brewing, all from Columbus.

Dayton Beer Company opened its first brewery and tasting room in Kettering in May 2012, the first in a wave of nearly a dozen Dayton-area breweries that would open over the next couple of years. It opened its much larger production brewery and taproom in downtown Dayton in April 2015, and started canning beers for retail sale soon thereafter. The original Kettering tasting room is now closed.
