Two Dayton children shot in the head last week have died.
Eight-year-old Khmorra Helton and her brother Kaiden Helton, 6, had been in critical condition at Dayton Children’s Hospital since the shooting Thursday morning, according to the hospital.
The Dayton mother who allegedly shot her children is scheduled to appear in Dayton Municipal Court today.
Here are important details about the shooting incident:
Urgent call: Dayton police responding to an emergency at about 10 a.m. Thursday found two children — both shot in the head — in the front yard at 3821 Lori Sue Ave.
Mother is alleged shooter: The children’s mother allegedly shot the two and dragged their bleeding bodies outside while she was naked, according to police. An 11-year-old sister of the deceased children was home but unharmed.
Gun found: A Glock Model 43 9mm gun plus shell casings and bullet fragments were found inside the home, according to Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl.
Mother in custody: Claudena Helton, 30, the children’s mother, has been in the Montgomery County Jail since the shooting.
Charges: Claudena Helton is charged with two counts of attempted aggravated murder and four counts of felonious assault. The charges will likely become more severe now that the children have died.
Prior accusations: Police and court records show Claudena Helton has prior child endangering and domestic violence allegations in Dayton.
Signs of mental illness: Claudena Helton has had a history of volatile relationships and showed signs of mental illness at the crime scene and afterwards, according to police and court records and officials.
Active child welfare case: Biehl said one of the children was recently removed from public school to be home schooled. Montgomery County Children Services confirmed they have an open and active case involving Claudena Helton.
Domestic violence charge: In 2006, Claudena Helton was charged with domestic violence, but pleaded to lesser charges of disorderly conduct, according to court records. She was sentenced to 30 days in jail, with all 30 days suspended.
‘Save them from the evils of the world’: Claudena Helton was interviewed by Dayton police detectives Thursday at the Safety Building. According to the affidavit and statement of facts written by Dayton police Det. Rod Roberts, “Ms. Helton made admissions to shooting the children to save them from the evils of the world.”
