Dayton school board member to run for state legislature

Current Dayton school board member Adil Baguirov said that he intends to run in 2018 for the 40th Ohio House District seat, where incumbent Republican Mike Henne must step down after 2018 because of term limits.

But Baguirov, a Republican, may need to move to qualify for that seat, which represents the northern strip of Montgomery County — Clay Twp., Englewood, Vandalia and Huber Heights, before dipping south into Riverside and parts of northeast Dayton.

“That’s where a lot of my base of support lives and grows their businesses, where I’m active with the local business association, and where my main office is,” Baguirov said.

Baguirov’s limited liability company, Metropolis Holdings LLC, owns a Cooper Place condo in downtown Dayton and a large home in Butler Twp. on Meeker Commons Lane. But his voter registration is at a Maryland Avenue address in northeast Dayton. As a member of Dayton’s school board, Baguirov has been required to live within the boundaries of the Dayton school district.

Baguirov previously said he lives in the Cooper Place downtown condo owned by the LLC, adding that the Maryland Avenue address was a past residence and was out of date.

Only the modest Maryland Avenue home and the expansive Butler Twp. property are in the 40th House district. The Cooper Place condo is in the 39th House district, which covers most of Dayton and Jefferson Twp., and is currently represented by Democrat Fred Strahorn.

According to Ohio House of Representatives documents, “Members are required by the state constitution to reside in their respective districts for at least one year before being eligible to be elected that district’s legislator.”

Baguirov said he still has plenty of time to decide his move.

“I’ve lived in 40th district before, and will be doing it again,” he said. “I certainly will observe and follow the residency requirement to the tee, which is one year till the November 2018 general election.”
