Deadly Miami Twp. police officer-involved shooting: 7 things to know

The two Miami Twp. police officers involved in the December fatal shooting of a mobile home park resident have returned to work.

James McCarty and Shawn Todd were put on paid administrative leave Dec. 20, after the deadly shooting of 33-year-old Robert Edwards shortly after midnight.

Here are seven things to know about the case:

-Police said McCarty and Todd were dispatched on a welfare check on person who reportedly had a loaded weapon and was considering suicide.

-Edwards was shot in the front doorway of his Del Barton Avenue home.

-Police said McCarty fired his gun at Edwards after the man failed to comply with commands to drop his weapon - later determined to be a pellet gun – while Todd did not discharge his firearm.

-McCarty is on administrative duty, where he will remain "until we work our way through the judicial proceedings," Miami Twp. Capt. Russell Johnson said. Todd returned to full duty.

-McCarty was hired by Miami Twp. on March 20, 2017. He had 10 years experience combined with the Miamisburg and Virginia Beach police departments.

-The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation – at the request of the Miami Twp. Police Department - is investigating the shooting.

-It was the ninth officer-involved shooting in the Dayton area in 2017, and the seventh that resulted in a death. There were nine officer-involved shootings in the Dayton area in 2015 and 2016 combined.
