A new tavern and blues club called “Riff Raff Tavern on the Canal” is opening tonight in downtown Dayton.
The club at 130 N. Patterson Blvd. offers another entertainment venue near Fifth Third Field and RiverScape. It is owned by Mike and Bev Schmidt of Miamisburg.
Mike Schmidt said the tavern will be open tonight, Aug. 2, and Saturday night, Aug. 3, although with limited food options. Riff Raff’s kitchen will be operating next weekend, Aug. 9-10, when the club will be open for its second weekend, and a grand opening is planned for Aug. 23.
For now, Riff Raff is open Fridays from 5 p.m. to midnight and Saturdays from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Regular hours will begin after Labor Day, when the club will be open Thursday through Sunday.
The tavern will employ eight to 10 people by the time of its grand opening, Schmidt said. Its menu will include ribs, burgers, wings, sandwiches, fries and cole slaw. The tavern has seven televisions and will broadcast NFL games this fall, with an emphasis on the Cleveland Browns.
Schmidt said it has been his lifelong dream to operate a blues bar, and decided to pursue that dream after a 2005 conversation with his terminally ill father.
