Although he lived in Los Angeles for eight years, Cincinnati native Gary Owen’s career has been on the rise since he returned to Ohio seven years ago. The actor-comedian, who performs at the Funny Bone Comedy Club at The Greene in Beavercreek on Friday and Saturday, March 29-30, currently appears on the truTV series “Upload.”
Owen, who co-hosts the clip show with former NBA all-star Shaquille O’Neal, also appeared in the 2012 hit film “Think Like a Man.” He recently answered a few questions from his West Chester home.
Q: How has response been to the new series?
A: “We did good numbers the first few episodes. Four episodes have aired and they’re showing reruns the rest of March because truTV has a bunch of NCAA coverage for March Madness. They’re taking that time to promote the next six episodes and really get another publicity push behind it.”
Q: What’s it like working with Shaq?
A: “I’ve known him since 1997 and he’s really gotten behind me. I hosted the Shaq comedy tour and I’ve also done a couple of his comedy DVDs. He’s just a good guy and the great thing about him is he can laugh at himself. He doesn’t take himself seriously and he knows his limitations.”
Q: What’s next for you?
A: “We start filming ‘Talk Like a Man’ part two this summer but that won’t be out until 2014. There are a few other things but it’s kind of pointless to talk about now because nothing is definite. The entertainment business is the biggest temp job on the planet.”
Q: How do you mean?
A: “It’s a big roller coaster. There have been pockets where I had no TV or movies coming out for years. You didn’t know where the next thing was coming. As hot as you are one year, you can be just as cold the next year. You just never know.”
