The new Lock 27 brewpub that opens its doors to the public today, June 21, at 1035 S. Main St. in the Centerville Plaza offers a food menu and wines by the glass in addition to its 10 taps of craft beers and a selection of bottled beers.
The new brewpub isn’t yet offering its own beer from the two-barrel brewing system that can be seen through a display window in the back of the brewpub. Lock 27 founder and owner Steve Barnhart said that will happen in about a month, and he expects to replace about half of the 10 taps with Lock 27’s own brews.
The new brewpub hosted a sneak-peek soft opening event Thursday night. Lock 27 seats 60 to 70 people inside, and another dozen on a patio in front of the brewpub. It opened with 15 employees.
Unlike some of the other craft breweries that have opened in the Dayton area in recent months, Lock 27 offers a food menu with specialties such as a “Little Havana” Cuban sandwich, panini, hummus and a salumi plate. And it serves a selection of wines by the glass. For now, only beer and wine are available, although the brewpub’s license allows it to sell liquor, which Barnhart said “may come later.”
The “Lock 27” name pays homage to the Miami-Erie Canal that moved goods through the region via the Great Miami River in the early 1800s, connecting the Ohio River at Cincinnati with Lake Erie near Toledo. The canal’s Lock 27 was located in Miamisburg.
Lock 27 is the first of three new local brewpubs or craft breweries poised to open in the Dayton area. Toxic Brew will open to the public next Friday, June 28, in Dayton’s Oregon District, and the Fifth Street Brewpub is scheduled to open July 13 in Dayton’s St. Anne’s Hill district. Several more brewpubs in the region are in the works, taking advantage of a surge of consumer interest in craft brews and of a state law that took effect in March 2012 that makes it easier to open a brewpub or microbrewery.
Lock 27’s hours are Monday through Thursday 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., Friday 4 p.m. to midnight, Saturday 11 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, call (937) 433-2739.
