Who better to share a beer with than a sister?
Four beers (listed below) from Augsburg, Germany, Dayton’s sister city and the second oldest city in Germany, will be served in Dayton for the first time.
The man who brought Brauhaus Riegele’s beers to America’s shores couldn’t be more excited.
“These beers are so smooth,”said David Klass, president of the Dayton Home Builders Association.
Like me, Klass went to Augsburg in 2012 as part of the Sister City program and toured Riegele’s 627-year-old family-owned brewery.
Dayton Sister City’s Committee aims to promote the city internationally and increase global awareness of its residents through developing and maintaining active Sister City relationships.
Augsburg became Dayton’s Sister City in 1964.
Klass partnered with an importer in New York City and with Ohio-based Cavalier Distributing to bring Riegele to the United States.
Its debut 6 p.m. Friday at South Park Tavern, 1301 Wayne Ave., will be the first time the beer will be served in Dayton proper.
Brauhaus Riegele’s has already debuted at Alphabet City Beer Co. in New York and three other Miami Valley bars — Archer’s Tavern in Centerville, The Pub at the Greene in Beavercreek and Chappy’s Tap Room and Grille in Moraine.
Klass said tonight’s event is particularly special due to Augsburg and Dayton’s special relationship.
“This is the main event,” he said, recalling how special it was to tour the brewery founded in 1386.
The company is now under the direction of the 27th and 28th generations of the family that established it.
The beers from the company will be sold exclusively locally at the four bars until at least October, Klass said.
Riegele beers will also be sampled at the 15th Annual AleFest scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Carillon Historical Park, 1000 Carillon Blvd. in Dayton.
Klass said he wanted to start at businesses that specialized in craft beers.
“It has exceeded all expectation,” he said of the beers’ reception locally thus far.
