Franco’s ‘World Famoso’ Spaghetti wowing diners for nearly 40 years

You can try to replicate it — and people have tried — but chances are slim that anyone can make Franco’s “World Famoso” Spaghetti exactly like the staff of Franco’s Ristorante Italiano at 824 E 5th St. in Dayton’s Oregon District.

That’s because the recipe came out of the head of Franco Germano, the restaurant’s owner.

“It is my own creation,” said Germano, who was raised in Duronia, Italy. “I did garlic and oil and made my own sausage and added a scrambled egg with that. A lot of garlic.”

The dish, a delizioso Dayton area favorite, also contains romano cheese.

The spaghetti comes with a soup or a salad. I tried a hearty Italian sausage soup. The cost is $11.95 for plain, $14.95 for sausage or mushroom or $16.95 for both sausage and mushroom.

It was on the menu when Franco’s opened its doors 37 years ago, Germano told me when I popped into the restaurant recently.

“We also serve spaghetti with red sauce, meatball, meat sauces, but the Franco’s ‘World Famoso’ Spaghetti is unique, because no one knows how to make it,” Germano said.
