A classic Dayton restaurant known for its good eats on the cheap is offering a dessert deal to celebrate its 61st birthday.
Get a slice of pie or a serving of ice cream for 61 cents at Hasty Tasty Pancake House at 3509 Linden Ave. in Dayton through the end of the month. Customers must purchase a dinner or sandwich platter to receive the discount.
Dinners range from $6.95 to $7.95. Platters come with fries and are about $7.70 to $8.90.
Waitress Heather Brown said Hasty Tasty owner Mike Hackman started the anniversary discount promotion about five years ago. Dessert with meals were 60 cents last year and 59 cents the year before.
The restaurant is expected to get a special anniversary greeting from Dayton Mayor Gary Leitzell’s office.
Ice cream is regularly 95 cents a serving. Pie is $1.95. Hasty Tasty sells a different pie each month for 99 cents.
Charles R. Poston, who died in January, started the restaurant in 1952.
California-based humorist and chef Charles Phoenix stopped by the restaurant when he visited Dayton in December as part of his performance at the Dayton Art Institute.
He got a kick out of the joint.
“When you walk into a place, you feel the heart and soul of that place,” Phoenix said of Hasty Tasty. “This is the sort of place where time is in a blender.”
