When WYSO-FM (91.3) presents its annual Community Concert at RiverScape MetroPark in Dayton on Sunday, Sept. 8, it will take a much different form than past incarnations.
This concert, presented in the form of a live, retro-style radio program, features headliner Tim O’Brien, a bluegrass music veteran from Wheeling, W.V. Canadian singer-songwriter Old Man Luedecke, Athens-based songwriter JD Hutchison, local string band The Corndrinkers and emcee Bob Lucas also are on the show, which will be taped for later broadcast by WYSO.
Niki Dakota, WYSO’s music director and host of the daily program, “Excursions,” recently discussed this year’s event.
“This is a thank you to our listeners and supporters. It’s an opportunity to come out and hang with your friends, family and other WYSO supporters. We’re able to provide this great music for free because of our sponsors but also because of the public radio spirit.”
PUBLIC RADIO CONNECTION
“Tim O’Brien is a big fan of public radio so he’s really given us a super-kind public-radio-price to come here. Old Man Luedecke is actually playing for free because he wants to be on the bill. We’re feeding him and putting him up but he’s paying to get himself here. He’s not getting paid for the gig but he recognizes the caliber of what we’re putting on here.”
“JD Hutchinson was in the Hutchinson Brothers back in the early ’70s. He’s a fabulous songwriter. JD is sort of this hidden treasure in the middle of south Ohio and he’s a storyteller of the highest order. He’s going to be one of the shining beacons that comes out of this.”
“We’re so happy to have The Corndrinkers. They’ll more or less serve as a big chunk of the backing band as the artists come and go but Bob Lucas, from Mad River Theater Works, will be the real glue that holds it all together. He’s a consummate performer, actor and a songwriter of great note. The man has written songs that Alison Krauss has covered among others. He’s a very high-caliber talent.”
“We’ve had great attendance for these concerts in the past. This year it’s going to be even above and beyond that so we need to remind everyone to bring a chair to sit under the canopy at the beautiful RiverScape. We want people to come out for a great night of music but to also help us make radio by being part of the crowd and part of the cheers.”
