How much do Ohioans spend to smoke? New report shows the cost of tobacco use

A new report out this week details the costs of smoking and overall tobacco use in the United States — and Ohio falls somewhere in the middle of the 50-state pack.

Americans lose more than $300 billion per year to the costs of tobacco use, a new report from personal finance website WalletHub found.

WalletHub ranked each state by looking at the money smokers spend on their habit, the money they could have earned by instead investing in the stock market, increased health care costs and other losses.

Ohio ranked No. 24 overall, with the total cost per smoker averaging more than $1.4 million over someone’s lifetime, according to the report. New York took the worst spot, behind every state and Washington, D.C., with the total cost per smoker averaging around $2.3 million.

When it comes to the amount of money people spend on cigarettes, Ohioans were ranked No. 27. An Ohioan who smokes is likely to spend just under $114,000 on cigarettes throughout his or her lifetime, according to the report.

New York again took the top spot in the cost of cigarettes category. New Yorkers who smoke are estimated to spend around $194,341 on cigarettes over their lifetime, according to WalletHub.
