June restaurant news: 7 new, 3 coming soon, 1 closed

New

Arepas & Co. 

The area’s fourth Arepa’s & Co. opened its doors earlier this month. Located at 1000 Miamisburg-Centerville Road east of the Dayton Mall, the 17,000-square-foot space seats nearly 30 and employs six.

Canal Street Arcade & Deli 

One of downtown’s newest restaurants, Canal Street Arcade & Deli, opened its doors at 10:30 a.m. on June 28. This arcade features 27 arcade games, 13 beers on tap, one craft cocktail on tap, and another 30 beers in cans or bottles, according to founder Rob Strong.

Located at the former site of the iconic music venue, the Canal Street Tavern, the restaurant’s food menu will include favorites from the former Fifth Street Deli that Strong operated until late January.

District 6 Donuts

Founded by retired Dayton police officer Bill Parsons, District 6 Donuts opened on June 1. The new donut shop, located at 6 Oakwood Avenue offers doughnuts that are made to order. Customers are able to choose their own toppings.

Raising Cane's 

The first Dayton-area Raising Cane’s grand opening was June 28 for its location on Ohio 725 in Washington Twp. The Louisiana-based restaurant offers its customers chicken fingers, crinkle-cut fires, cole slaw, Texas Toast and sauces that are made in-house every day.

Napales 

On June 8, the 2nd Street Market introduced its newest food vendor, Napales. This vendor sells Mexican street food, including tamales, tacos, flautas and salad bowls, according to Jennifer Herrera, co-founder of Napales with husband Santiago Herrera. This vendor will operate Thursday through Sunday.

Tastefully Roasted Coffee

Two former Saxbys Coffee locations have morphed into Tastefully Roasted Coffee locations, with a slogan of “Local Tastes Better.” The locations, at 6 Oakwood Ave. in Oakwood and inside the Dayton Mall in Miami Twp., are now locally owned and locally driven, according to Josh Mueller, assistant manager of the Oakwood location.

This Guy’s Coffee

In Early June, the former Saxbys Coffee location at 284 W. Central Ave. in Springboro transformed the shop into an independent business called “This Guy’s Coffee.” Kurt and Kerri Ritter, the husband and wife duo that owns and manages the shop, are looking forward to operating an independent coffee shop, but also appreciate their tenure with Saxbys. “We’ve been with Saxbys for 11 years, and it was a good ride,” Kerri said.

Big Rack Brewery 

Big Rack Brewery has taken to heart the saying: “If you can’t beat‘em, join’em.” Kennedy Vineyards in Southern Darke County plans to open Big Rack Brewery at its facility and tasting room at 3911 State Route 722 near New Madison. Winery and brewery co-founder John Kennedy told this news outlet, “We kept hearing customers — usually husbands, but sometimes wives, too — say, ‘I don’t drink wine. I’m a beer drinker.’”

Cardboard Crowns 

Cardboard Crowns, a board game-themed café, is in the early stages of development near the Dayton Mall. Dayton’s first full-service board game café will be located within the Corners at the Mall retail center off of Ohio 741. Founder Ben T. Adams has applied for a full liquor license for the space.

Duck Donuts 

Duck Donuts will open its first Dayton-area location on Brown Street between Fifth Third Bank and Cassano’s Pizza in early August. This is the same complex that holds Fusian, PotBelly and Bibibop.

Duck Donuts’ concept will allows customers to customize their own doughnut, using a vanilla cake doughnut that is made fresh — “dropped into the fryer when you walk in the door,” said Todd Roberts, business advisor for the Dayton-area Duck Donut franchise owners. Customers then choose their icings, sprinkles and other toppings.

Closed

Cajun Ming, located within the Mall at Fairfield Commons, closed on May 26. A new tenant is lined up to open in the space, according to mall officials.
