Latest look: What to see at Layer Park before large contamination cleanup begins

The seven-acre Layer Park in Miami Twp. has been closed since December, 2015, after soil samples revealed high levels of lead leftover from a skeet shooting range located there decades ago. Since the closing, additional testing of residential properties around the border of the park have shown lead levels exceeding the EPA safety threshold on some properties.

The EPA is expected to begin a months-long cleanup of the park property this spring that will involve removing tons of topsoil.

Here are seven things to know about the effort:

1. The EPA is estimating the cleanup process will take about four months.

2. The cleanup is being managed under the EPA's Superfund Removal Action.

3. There are 32 properties that touch Layer Park's boundaries.

4. Twenty-five property owners consented to testing for lead on their land.

5. The highest lead levels found were 60-times the level the EPA considers safe.
