At 32 years old, Katie Radloff didn’t know why she was passing out — and neither did her doctors. After test after test and a string of coincidences, Radloff learned she has cardiomyopathy, a weakening of the heart muscle.
Five years later — after lots of adjustments in her life — Radloff is at what she calls 95 percent, She is an active volunteer for the American Heart Association (AHS) and Go Red for Women, and she is a believer in eating healthy, exercising and being aware of heart disease. “I know there are a lot of people out there who don’t know things like this can happen to women so young and that a lot of women don’t even know that heart disease is what their No. 1 killer is, more than all cancers combined; in fact more than the next three causes of death combined,” Radloff said.
Go Red for Women is a premiere source of information and education on heart disease that connects millions of women of all ages and gives them tangible resources to turn personal choices into lifesaving actions, is a part of the American Heart Association, a national group with a mission to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday the Dayton branch will hold the sixth annual Go Red for Women Luncheon at Sinclair Community College’s Ponitz Center. Men and women are invited to attend the event to embrace the cause, learn about the risk factors, participate in free health screenings, interact with health professionals and listen to motivational stories.
Marsha Bonhart of WDTN-TV (Channel 2) and Kim Faris of LITE 94.5 will emcee the event and Holly Hoffman of “Survivor Nicaragua” will be the guest motivational speaker.
Cris Peterson, Dayton’s Go Red for Women director, said that Go Red chooses to have the luncheon in a different month than American Heart month (February) “so women think about their overall health all year long.”
At the first luncheon in 2007 they had 110 attendees. They expect more than 400 this year.
The luncheon is also a fundraiser for Go Red.
