Fad diets come and go, but calories always matter if you are serious about weight loss. Some sobering data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that in 2011 the average American consumed nearly one ton of food, approximately 1,996 pounds, in a year. The 2011 study revealed that Americans ate: 632 pounds of dairy products, 415.4 pounds of vegetables (29 pounds of those veggies were french fries), 273 pounds of fruit, and 183.6 pounds of meat and poultry. A whopping 141.6 pounds of sweeteners and 53 gallons of soda were also consumed.
