Kenton Ridge band traveling to New Orleans for Mardi Gras parade

The Kenton Ridge High School Marching Band is heading to New Orleans to perform this weekend at a Mardi Gras parade.

“We are super excited,” Band Director Jim Templeton said.

There are 108 students traveling for the event. It’s the second time in the past five years the Kenton Ridge band has traveled to take part in a major parade. In 2012, the group went to New York City to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The band will perform in the Krewe of Endymion parade Saturday.

“It’s kind of labeled the family friendly parade,” Templeton said.

He said band members have worked hard to prepare for the parade and he’s excited to get down there and for the students to enjoy the trip.

“We like to travel, we like to perform,” he said. “We like to let other people know what this band does for the community.”

The students will also get to check out some historic sites in the days leading up to the parade, Templeton said. Students will also get to go on a swamp tour and a river boat with live jazz.

“It gives the kids a great opportunity to leave Springfield and travel,” he said.

Senior Taylor Thompson said she’s excited for the trip.

“It is an amazing opportunity,” Thompson said.

She said she is already getting nervous about the Saturday performance but plans to enjoy the trip. She said however that the 17-hour bus ride the students started Wednesday was going to be tough.

The band raised money for the trip by selling cookie dough, pizza and raffle tickets.
