New superintendent named for Springboro schools

The former superintendent of the Greene County Career Center is the new leader of the school district in Springboro.

Dan Schroer, 47, will be paid $140,000 a year under a three-year contract, but said he hoped to be Springboro’s school superintendent for many years to come.

“We were looking for a school where I can finish my career. This is an opportunity to spend many, many years in an outstanding school district,” Schroer said before Thursday’s school board meeting in Springboro.

Schroer plans to live nearby in German Twp., in Montgomery County, on a farm he shares with his son’s family. His two youngest children will attend the Valley View school district.

“The community will think I live here because of how active and visible I will be,” he said.

Schroer comes to the Springboro district after two years as superintendent of the Margaretta Local Schools in Erie County.

He previously headed the career center in Xenia in Greene County and was assistant superintendent of Butler Tech in Hamilton, Butler County. He was a finalist in the recent superintendent search in Dayton.

“Mr. Schroer’s overall experience and his passion to be a collaborative superintendent for Springboro made him a strong candidate from the beginning,” Dave Stuckey, board president, said in a press release. “We believe he has the expertise to work effectively with the board, the staff, and community to continue the mission and vision that our district defined with our community over the last three years and define goals with our staff for the future of our students.”

The board also approved a contract for $90,000 a year with Austin Rhoads as the district’s athletic director.

Schroer’s contract also includes benefits including a term life insurance policy valued at $200,000 and 25 days of vacation.

He said he would begin by talking with staff and residents.

“The first thing you do is listen. You listen to what is going on and what has been successful,” said Schroer, who talked with a parent and a group of students before the meeting.

Schroer was one of three finalists, all currently working as superintendents in other Ohio districts. He was selected by staff and residents, as well as the board during a final stage of interviews earlier this week, according to board members.

“Everything was aligned,” board member Lisa Babb said.

He will replace Todd Petrey, who resigned effective Aug. 31, to become the chief operating officer with the Mason City Schools.

Schroer received his bachelor’s degree in agriculture education from Ohio State University in 1993 and his master’s degree in agriculture education from Ohio State in 1999.

His state licenses as a principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent are from the University of Dayton.
