Springfield students to host escape rooms

Breaking out of an escape room might be difficult but helping the Springfield High School choir and orchestra pay for a trip to Disney is easy.

The musical groups will again host a breakout room challenge at Springfield High School to raise money to pay for a trip to Disney. They have been invited to perform a mini-concert at Disney World in Florida and have started to raise money to pay for the trip.

The event will start at noon Saturday, Feb. 10, and go until 6 p.m.

“We did the same fundraiser back in December and it was really successful so we decided to do it again,” Choir Director Emily Fowler said. “We are going to have four escape rooms in our music wings.”

Players can pick from four different types of rooms. The themes are lost in time, art heist, plane crash/hostage and Disney Villain Takeover. The groups wanted to have a Disney-themed room, Fowler said, because the money is going toward their trip to the theme park in Florida.

The escape room kits the district owns have been utilized several times already but it will be the first time they’ve been used to raise money, Career ConnectED Program Coordinator Rene Stratton said.

“We are going and performing at Disney World over spring break, so that’s what we are trying to raise funds for, but then also all the other things that we do throughout the year,” Stratton said. “Both groups are getting ready to go to contests, which have fees, so it’s for everything that we try to do.”

Anyone is welcomed to come out and support the musical groups. Rooms can have 10 to 12 players each hour at a time. Groups with fewer players should expect to be paired with other players, just like in at a real escape room business.
