Clark County voters approve road, safety levies

Residents approved a handful of new tax levies Tuesday in several Clark County townships, providing additional revenue for roads, firefighters and law enforcement.

The levies will allow Enon to hire an additional full-time officer for the village and Mad River Twp. to cover the cost for a full-time Clark County deputy to patrol the township. In South Charleston, voters approved additional money to repair the village’s roads, while in Bethel Twp. the fire department will have money for equipment and to create a stipend to encourage volunteers to work a night shift.

Both Mad River Twp. and Enon asked voters to cover costs for additional law enforcement and residents agreed in both cases.

Voters in Mad River Twp. approved a .08-mill, five-year levy by 52 percent to 48 percent, according to final, unofficial results. The township had previously contracted with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office for a dedicated deputy but the cost to provide the service had risen and voters rejected a proposal to raise more revenue last fall. It will cost about $30 a year for the owner of a $100,000 home.

In Enon, the additional revenue from the 2.5-mill, five-year levy will pay for one additional full-time officer for the village and cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $87.50 per year. Voters approved the levy 53 percent to 47 percent, according to final, unofficial results.

Bethel Twp. had asked voters to approve a 2-mill, five-year levy for staffing and equipment for the township’s volunteer fire department. The levy will raise money for vehicle and equipment replacement. Along with their hourly wage, the levy will also allow the village to create a stipend program to provide an incentive for volunteers to work a night shift for the volunteer fire and EMS department. It will cost about $70 a year for the owner of a $100,000 home. Voters approved that levy 55 percent to 45 percent, according to final, unofficial results.

South Charleston voters also approved a 0.25 percent income tax increase to pay for road repairs in the village. The additional revenue will be used for road maintenance and improvements and village officials have said it won’t be used to hire additional staff members or increase wages for village employees.
