Clearcreek Twp. fire chief retires while under review

Bob Kidd will remain on the payroll through December.

Clearcreek Twp. Fire Chief Bob Kidd has agreed to leave his position with the township, although the reason for his decision remains unclear.

Kidd was placed on administrative leave with pay in June. On Wednesday, the township trustees unanimously approved a resolution agreeing to accept Kidd's retirement, effective Dec. 31.

Meanwhile Kidd will remain chief, although two assistant chiefs will handle operation of the fire division, Administrator Jack Cameron said.

“He’ll be in an advisory role,” Cameron said after a special meeting.

Kidd’s annual salary is $99,189, according to the township.

Cameron said Kidd decided to retire, while the township was in the process of reviewing the issues prompting him to be placed on administrative leave.

Asked why Kidd retired, Cameron said, ” “I guess you’d have to ask him.”

The trustees left without making any comment during or after the brief meeting called to approve the Kidd resolution. The meeting lasted 70 seconds.

Kidd was not at the meeting. Attempts to reach him and the trustees afterward were unsuccessful.

This news organization has requested to review Kidd’s personnel file. Cameron declined to permit the review until the file has been redacted of details not deemed subject to public review

According to the agreement, Kidd remains an employee through Dec. 31 “at which time his last paycheck will be considered payment in full.”

Kidd is also allowed to keep his helmet and badge, and the township agreed to provide a reference letter stating Kidd voluntarily retired and list his accomplishments.

Cameron declined to say why Kidd was placed on leave.

Since January 2010, Kidd has been chief in the fire district, which covers Springboro and the unincorporated areas of the township. Under his direction, the department moved to full-time, upgraded equipment and improved its insurance ratings, according to a press release.

“The township thanks Chief Robert Kidd for his years of service and everything he has helped the department improve and identify for improvement in his time as fire chief,” concluded the release.

Cameron said it was unclear whether Kidd would be replaced internally or through a search.
