New Carlisle seeks to fill empty council seat, welcomes new member

The city of New Carlisle has a new city council member and will interview a handful of candidates to fill one more vacancy.

The current opening is from the departure of former New Carlisle Mayor Lowell McGlothin, a longtime council member who won a race for Clark County commissioner in November. McGlothin had to resign his New Carlisle seat to take the job as county commissioner.

New Carlisle Mayor Mike Lowrey said council members will interview several candidates in the coming days and will hopefully have the seat filled soon.

“I like someone who has been involved in city functions,” Lowrey said of what he will be looking for in the new council members. “And not just things that are only ran by the city. Things like committees, community gardens, someone who attends city council meetings regularly. I will be looking for someone who understands how the city runs.”

New Carlisle resident Jim Leathley was sworn as a council member last month.

Lowrey said he is excited to welcome Leathley. He filled a seat vacated by former council member Bill McIntire, who resigned because he and his family moved out of the city.

“Jim is really involved,” Lowrey said. “He is involved in school activities. He has lived here for a long time. He is very supportive of a lot of organizations in town.”

Leathley also has a history with finances, Lowrey said, and that will be be a good tool for the council as well.
