5 things Kettering is looking foward to in 2017

Kettering mayor Don Patterson delivered his State of the City address this month.

Here are five highlights from Patterson’s address:

1. Shroyer Road improvements

The city of Kettering (and Oakwood) will begin a months-long road improvement project to the resurfacing of Shroyer Road. The project will cost about $2.1 million, $340,000 of which will come from Kettering.

2. Improvements to the fire department

Significant changes are on the horizon for the city's fire department, including the construction of two new fire stations, and the creation of 13 full-time firefighter jobs.

Construction is underway on Station 34 on Woodman Drive near Tenneco, and is scheduled to be complete in 2017. Construction of Station 37 on Dorothy Lane near South-dale School begins this summer.

3. Streetscape improvements on Wilmington Pike

This spring the city will begin major streetscape improvements on the Wilmington Pike corridor between Stroop and Marshall roads including installing new streetlights and planting trees. On the west side of the corridor an eight-foot multi-use path will be installed, offering a connection to existing regional bike ways and improved pedestrian access to businesses.

4. Construction of new businesses on Wilmington Pike

Construction is currently underway on a new Grismer Tire store on Wilmington Pike, where the vacant Burger King was demolished last October.

Key Terrace, a low-income housing development for the homeless, is also under construction near the intersection of Wilmington Pike and Stroop Road.

5. Job growth

Along with new businesses like Grismer and 13 new firefighter positions, Kettering expects three businesses to expand and add jobs to the area, including more than 400 from manufacturer Tenneco.

The city applied for, and were awarded ED/GE grants for Tenneco, NanoSperse and Prime Controls Inc., bringing nearly 500 jobs to the Kettering area.
