West Nile virus found in two samples in Warren County

Two samples taken in September from traps set in Warren County tested positive for the West Nile virus.

Today the results were reported by the Ohio Department of Health and released by the Warren County Combined Health District.

The tests, from different pools of up to 50 mosquitoes captured on Sept. 19 in Clearcreek Twp., were the first of the year to test positive for the virus linked with a potentially serious illness, according to health officials.

There still have been no reports of people contracting the virus in Warren County, Health Commissioner Duane Stansbury said Thursday.

Since May, mosquitoes have been trapped and tested and areas with standing water in public areas treated with an environmentally safe larvicide on a weekly basis.

This will probably be the last week of testing, due to dropping temperatures, Stansbury said.
